Imagine everyone’s surprise when Ed Klenotiz, the starting, All Conference offensive guard for the football team, came out for Track and said that he would like to try the Hurdles! Offensive linemen stereotypically throw the Shot or Disc when they come out for Track, but offensive linemen NEVER hurdle… it just doesn’t make sense. Somehow, some way though, Ed Klenotiz didn’t just Hurdle, he proved to be one of the best Hurdlers in our history!
In 1988, after thirty two years in the Susquenango League, Chenango Forks decided to join the Southern Tier Athletic Conference. With this change in competition, a new Dual Meet schedule was enacted and Coach Larry Brooks began to keep track of individual scoring for every dual meet and at the STAC Championship Meet. With his hurdling ability, Ed became our first ever leader in points and even though he only had two years to score his points, he remained in our Top Twenty in points more than thirty years after he graduated and to this day is one of only four athletes to be the career leader in points at any time in their career.
Klenotiz was our first ever Hurdler to break a minute in the 400 Hurdles and is one of only three Forks hurdlers to be in the Top Ten in both the 110 and 400 Meter Hurdles. He scored the 8th most points ever by a Senior, forever showing that stereotypes are not always fact, and giving all Forks linemen a leg to stand on when they ask their Track coaches if they can try the Hurdles...
